Calvi

Calvi

20 centuries of history. 1 knockout beach.

Labyrinthine Streets

Calvi commands the Mediterranean. This castle-on-the-sea was built to scare sailors 100km away. Now it tempts them in. Inside the city walls, play hide-and-seek in labyrinthine streets. Then cool off with a gelato infused with Calvi flavours: myrtle, blackcurrant, lavender. Sunny day? You bet. Only 7cm of rain falls between June and August. Calvi is one hot destination.

A Scuba Playground

Your Guide to Calvi

A Scuba Playground

Empires tried to sneak their piece of paradise. Romans, Pisans and Genoese crafted today’s architectural legacy. In 1944 an American Boeing B-17 crash-landed just south of Calvi. The bomber lies intact in 24m of crystal clear water. The plane’s 32m wingspan has become a scuba playground for conger eels and groupers. A dozen dive sites of note (including ‘The Library’, where shelves of scorpion fish rest in silence) sprinkle the Calvi coastline.

Colour. History. Beaches. Partying.

Discover the town’s surrounding shores on a Calvi yacht charter, which are equally sublime. The Revellata peninsula punches 3km from town in a chasm of cliffs and creeks. By kayak it’s spectacular. With a snorkel, GoPro and cool bag of sushi, it’s off-the-scale fun. Keep a keen eye for ospreys and shags. And wave to daredevil runners on the precipitous coastal trail above.

In the other direction from Calvi sits 6km of sandy beach. Breeze in by SUP, seascooter or sailboard. The 2nd Parachute Regiment of the French Foreign Legion, who are based behind the beach, parachute in on a daily basis. Their organised line of black parachutes makes one heck of a sight.

Paradise Beach

Corsica is reckoned to have four of the world’s Top Ten beaches. The very best? Plage de Saleccia. An endless icing sugar ribbon lapped by cerulean seas. Even the Bahamas can’t compete. There’s more. Plage de Saleccia is bound by the Désert des Agriates. This inaccessible and uninhabited desert hides ten other sandy coves. Access is solely by sea. Unless your Y.CO Charter Specialist arranges a 4x4 off-road driving day in a Toyota Land Cruiser.
