Anything goes in St Tropez. Yacht guests can wear flip-flops, kaftans, Panama hats or Bermuda shorts. In this former fishing village posing is considered arriviste. Yet sinking pastis and sunbathing topless never go out of fashion. In the words of Colette, a former St Tropez resident, writer and Moulin Rouge dancer: "Total absence of humour renders life impossible".

St Tropez’s main square, Places des Lices, tinkles to three sounds. Sugar cubes in black coffee. Ice cubes in citron pressé. And pétanque balls clinking under plane trees. Crew can drive you in by Mini Moke, a vintage open-top buggy. Naturally, Place des Lices is utterly telegenic. Fashion boss Karl Lagerfeld showcased a catwalk collection in this very square. Then played pétanque in his trademark black gloves.
St Tropez Style
Superyachts and sunshine created St Tropez’s Vieux Port. In 1882 painter Paul Signac sailed into the harbour in his yacht Olympia. He found a living canvas ablaze with colours, characters and countless cafés. Signac’s rainbow palette attracted artist pals: Pierre Bonnard, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy. Their sun-splashed canvases now reside in harbourside gallery Musée de l'Annonciade. The scenes? Exactly the same as you see in the Vieux Port today: drinkers, lovers, yachts and shops selling the world’s most calorific cake - Tarte Tropezienne. Your steward will purchase one for dessert back on board. Calories can be burnt with the assistance of a fitness instructor in your yacht gym.
Reverting To The 1950s
When daytrippers depart each afternoon, St Tropez reverts to the 1950s. An in-the-know party zone. A place where no one cares if you demolish platters of calamari with your bare hands, drink Kronenbourg from cans, or dance teetotal in Caves du Roy - a red hot nightclub that throbs until dawn.
