Mljet is the Croatian island with everything. It’s bookended by fractals of islets that serve pirate adventures or inter-island swimming races. Both ends are food-mad. The western peninsula at Pomona hosts a cluster of fishermen’s hut restaurants, where amberjack and bream can be selected from giant aquariums. The eastern peninsula at Saplunara has a sandy swoosh beach dotted with palm front parasols, where squid ink risotto and crab ravioli are made à la minute. The best thing about Mljet? A mere 1,000 people share a 100km2 paradise. Privacy has never been so tasty.

Mljet’s tiny tourist office recently purchased a drone. YouTube is awash with lonely capes, miniscule islands and abandoned windmills. Plus inland lakes, ancient footpaths and mountain passes. Fake news it is not. Better still, most highlights on this 40km island are reached by a rollercoaster asphalt highway. By scooter it’s scintillating. By bike it’s like the Tour de France redux.

Mljet enchanted Odysseus. The Greek explorer took refuge in a secret cave on the island’s southern shore. The grotto is only accessible only by boat, followed by a daring swim. Rays of sun pierce the inky depths like a million dollar glitterball. Swim back out to sea for cliff dives. Come back tomorrow? Odysseus ended up staying here for seven years.

Half of Mljet’s pristine splendour is protected within Croatia’s first National Park. The park’s entrance gate smacks of a secret garden. Tiptoe through a ruined Roman fort into an enchanted forest where deer, mongoose and rare eagle owls roam free. The parkland is centred around two vast saltwater lakes. Oak, pine and olive droop into the shallows, which can be navigated in kayaks by explorers aged from 8 to 80. A walkway loops around the entire watery expanse: the world’s most bucolic jogging track.
