Y.CO joins YachtAid Global in Costa Rica

Operation Jade

Y.CO regularly partners with YachtAid Global, a humanitarian aid response and scientific research non-profit organisation. We flew three of our team members out to Costa Rica to participate in Operation Jade – an initiative that funds and assists with the building of local schools and sports facilities. Read on to discover their highlights.

Guardia, Costa Rica

In September 2024, we flew Dave, Sarah and Jacqui from our Fort Lauderdale office out to Guardia in Costa Rica to assist with Operation Jade, an initiative run by YachtAid Global that focuses on rebuilding and repairing schools that are much in need of infrastructure updates. Situated in the Guanacaste Conservation Area, Guardia is rich with tropical biodiversity and a wealth of natural ecosystems, from marine through to cloud forest and rainforest. Located just a stone’s throw away from Guardia is Papagayou Marina, where superyachts regularly dock and crews often spend some downtime in the area. Sarah once docked at this port for 3 months, back when she worked as crew on superyacht Azteca II. To be able to come back and help the local community felt like coming full circle; Operation Jade was going to be an initiative that felt close to heart.

DAY 1 - New Classroom Floor

It’s the first day at the local high school and the team are put to work pouring concrete, soon to become the floor for a new classroom and laid out by local contractors. YachtAid Global volunteers, Y.CO, contractors and teachers all come together to work on the site.

The team enjoyed getting stuck into the project and learning more about the local community. Filling and shifting 5-gallon buckets with sand and rocks before adding to the cement mixer was hard but rewarding! Later in the day Jacqui and Sarah were invited to join the teachers making tamales – a traditional Mexican dish consisting of corn dough that is filled with delicious filling often beans, cheese and meats, then wrapped in banana leaf and steamed. When there are no classes, the school teachers use the opportunity to make tamales to fundraise for the ongoing development of the school.

Donating sports equipment

Y.CO donates sports equipment to the school – they receive volleyball nets, footballs and goals, basketballs and hoops. Everybody heads over to the gymnasium to install the new sports equipment for the kids.

The Y.CO team enjoyed their time bonding with the teachers and seeing the excitement around the new sports equipment. It turned out the school’s volleyball net was on temporary loan from a neighboring school, so they were beyond happy to finally have one they can call their own. Everyone pulled together to create a volleyball base out of tires and poles ready for their new net.

"The teachers would bring us fresh juice, watermelon and chicharrónes. At the end of the day we all sat down together eating tamales and drinking coffee."

Day 2 - Work hard, play hard

The new classroom floor is completed and Y.CO team spend the afternoon playing various sports with the students.

The day began with the school principle thanking Y.CO and YachtAid Global for their donation and efforts on the project. The concrete work around the classroom was finished up and as a special thanks, Jacqui and Sarah were gifted handmade fans and Dave was gifted a beautiful pen, all decorated with Costa Rican folk pattern, which is a traditional painting style expressive of the country’s rich culture and history. Dave and Jacqui flexed their basketball skills by rounding up the afternoon shooting hoops with the high school kids.

"The PE teacher spoke to us about how grateful she was, she even teared up a bit which of course made all of us tear up too"

Day 3 - Painting Refresh

It’s the final day volunteering and the team heads to the elementary school to paint two classrooms and a bathroom.

For the first part of the day, they painted the exterior of the school including the windows and a new bathroom for the kids. They selected warm and vibrant colours for the classroom, ready for the children to return to their studies.

Band Practice

No class today, but band practice is on and Y.CO enjoy participating.

With the painting finished, the team were invited to listen to the students perform some of their favourite songs. They were so excited to perform and even persuaded Dave to play drums with them. The band teacher expressed his gratitude for all the hard work and a mother of one of the students thanked them too, reaffirming their efforts and explaining how this project makes such a huge difference to the community.

Great Work Team Yellow!

Some of our crew are frequent volunteers for this cause and have done great work in the area. The Y.CO funding was greatly appreciated by the local community, many of whom work at the nearby Papagayo Marina, a superyacht hub in Central America.
