Alesund

Alesund is the town that feels straight out of a storybook. Rebuilt in art nouveau style after a fire in 1904, it’s all pastel towers, curved rooftops and cobbled charm. If Disney made Norway, it would look like Alesund.

The Eagle Road

Engineers christened it Ørnevegen (Eagle Road) after the eagles that patrol the highway’s 11 hairpin bends. This mountain road opened in 1955 to connect the clifftop with the fjord 620m down below. Commercial vehicle companies use its 1 in 10 incline to road test cars. While cyclists bomb from the waterfall at the top, down to the sea, in matter of minutes. The views are staggering.

Iconic Lighthouses

Ålesund’s lighthouses have become cultural icons. When Molja Lighthouse became automated, groovy architects Snohetta (designers of Oslo’s Norwegian National Opera House) turned it into a single room hotel. Alnes Lighthouse is now an art gallery and café. Visit by tender - the cakes are excellent. Erkna Lighthouse doubles as a bird sanctuary for eider ducks and sea swallows. With advance permission you may paddleboard in.
