Alotau to Goodenough Island. This itinerary is a dynamic exploration of Papua New Guinea’s southern coastline, blending cultural depth with natural wonder. Over nine days, you’ll visit WWII shipwrecks, colonial relics, and experience vibrant village life, all while cruising through remote island groups and lush tropical bays.
Day 01
Your adventure begins in Alotau, where you’ll be welcomed aboard and introduced to the crew. After settling in, we cruise to Waga Waga.
Days 01 & 02
Waga Waga is a peaceful bay surrounded by lush scenery and welcoming locals. Here, you’ll snorkel over the wreck of the Musoota, a WWII-era vessel now home to vibrant soft corals and playful clownfish. The next morning, enjoy a walk through the village, feed freshwater eels in the creek, and learn about betel nut harvesting. Later, we’ll cruise to Yarowani Island to explore remnants of colonial history slowly being reclaimed by the jungle.
Days 03 & 04
Cruise to Samarai Island for a guided visit to the pearl farm, where you can purchase beautiful pearls. Anchor off a white-sand island and enjoy a relaxed beach barbecue or romantic dinner.
The following day, snorkel at a nearby manta ray cleaning station and explore reefs teeming with rare pygmy seahorses and waspfish. Visit the Manta Watch research camp and take a scenic walk to Kwato Island’s historic hilltop church overlooking the China Straits. Later, we cruise to Fortescue Strait for idyllic snorkeling spots.
Day 05
Arrive in Hiliwau after a morning cruise and head ashore to meet local villagers and enjoy a traditional sing-sing dance. Trek to the Skull Cave and, for those seeking adventure, continue to a secluded jungle waterfall for a private picnic. The coral gardens here offer some of the most pristine snorkeling in the region.
Day 06
Cruise to Normanby Island and snorkel isolated reefs before trekking into the jungle to spot the rare and beautiful Bird of Paradise. Paddle board or kayak through nearby Sewa Bay’s calm waters.
Day 07
Cruise to Gomwa Bay and meet a local guide for a trek to the Dei Dei hot springs, nestled at the base of a dormant volcano. In the afternoon, anchor at Observation Point for snorkeling, paddle boarding, and kayaking.
Day 08
Cruise north to Cape Vogel and anchor in Lasi Lasi Bay or stern-to at Ipotato Island—perfect for a beach picnic or romantic dinner. The next morning, visit Boigaboiga Village for a vibrant cultural dance performance.
Day 09
Depending on your preference, circumnavigate Ferguson Island with dramatic views of the towering volcanic Goodenough Island. Stop at the Barrier Islands for water sports, or explore the Amphlett Islands and mangrove-lined Posa Posa Harbor. We’ll cruise overnight back to Alotau for disembarkation.
