Classic Yachts for Sale
Classic yachts have an allure that outlives trends, but what exactly makes a yacht “classic”? And why do buyers continue to seek them out? We spoke to Y.CO’s James Pool, a yacht sales expert with a deep appreciation for design and history, to get his perspective on the appeal of classic yachts for sale today.
“For me a classic is design and age focused. Varnished capping rails, long classic lines, canoe stern often but not always, flared bow gently rising and longer. Age wise, she offers experience, tells a story and has design features pre 2000.” – James
While there’s no universal definition, age plays a role: yachts of 30 years or more can qualify for recognition by heritage clubs. Yet, James explains, it’s not just age but maintenance and upgrades that preserve the classic feel through the decades.

“A classic has a story. They represent a custom project that dates back to a specific brief, design and technologies available decades ago. Why do people buy vintage cars? A passion, appreciation for history, classic design and a story.” – James
Unlike many modern yachts built in series, most classics are one-of-a-kind. Each reflects the vision of its original owner, the shipyard’s craftsmanship, and the technology of its era. This uniqueness, combined with the responsibility of balancing modern upgrades while retaining heritage, is what gives classics their enduring value.
“The typical buying audience tends to be US and UK clients who appreciate the story and classic gentleman’s feel… Also very popular amongst the Greek market where many shipping magnates appreciate the charm and elegance of a classic yacht.”
Classic yachts appeal to those who prioritise character and tradition over cutting-edge features. According to James, most clients are older, experienced yachtsmen, often drawn to the elegance of design and willing to embrace the quirks and limitations that come with heritage vessels.
Interiors are equally distinctive: darker woods, artwork, pillars, decorative details, and the feel of a lived-in home rather than a minimalist contemporary space. It’s a classic gentleman and ladies’ yacht aesthetic from a different time, imbued with character and tradition.
Built in 1993 for the Barclay brothers, Lady Beatrice embodies the spirit of a modern classic.
“She was the result of one family’s brief. Two opposing identical master cabins on Main deck forward is an example of a very custom request… With no rebuild since delivery, she operates with her original Caterpillar engines, and the same chief engineer since the build.” Share James.
Decades of careful maintenance mean Lady Beatrice remains in excellent condition. Her interiors, once very traditional, have been sensitively modernised to stay fresh while retaining her classic atmosphere. She represents the type of yacht that blends heritage with continued functionality, appealing to those seeking timeless design.
“New builds come with the latest technology, new manuals and need to be taken on by crew… Classic yacht ownership involves understanding the historic systems aboard, and ensuring there is good transfer of knowledge so continued maintenance is carried out.”
While new yachts offer cutting-edge technology and compliance, classics require a different mindset. Regulatory changes can make commercial registration challenging without significant refits. For many owners, this is part of the appeal: classics are to be enjoyed and nurtured, not rushed.
“Nobody needs a classic yacht, but many look at others in awe wishing they could enjoy one for a chapter of their yachting story… She offers sophistication and charm against modern day options.”
The decision is rarely about practicality. It’s about passion, owning a piece of history, a yacht with character, and continuing its story for a new generation. For some, it’s about accommodating family and friends in style. For others, it’s about finally stepping into a world they’ve admired from afar.
Classic yachts are not for everyone, but for those who value heritage, design, and individuality, they represent something modern yachts cannot replicate. With vessels like Lady Beatrice, buyers have the opportunity to own not just a yacht, but a legacy.
