48 Hours in

Zakynthos

Framed by the shifting blues of the Ionian Sea, Zakynthos is one of Greece's most striking island escapes. Towering limestone cliffs, hidden sea caves and crystalline waters define a coastline best explored from the water. Spend 48 hours discovering the island beyond the postcards, where quiet anchorages, local flavours and dramatic scenery unfold at every turn.

The Flourishing Island

Zakynthos is best known for Navagio Beach, but the island's appeal runs far deeper than its most photographed shoreline. Beyond the famous cliffs lie hidden coves, sea caves and protected marine reserves where the rhythm of the Ionian sets the pace.

Mythology tells that Apollo and Artemis were drawn to the island's forests and shores. Today, the same natural beauty continues to captivate.

Over 48 hours, move effortlessly between coast and countryside, anchoring beneath dramatic cliffs, exploring protected waters and dining as the sun sinks into the Ionian horizon. According to Ariane Cerdan, Y.CO yacht charter expert, the real appeal of Zakynthos lies in how much of it remains hidden from land. "The island's most rewarding moments happen on the water," she explains. "The further you move from the well-known spots, the more exclusive it feels."

Local Morning

First Light at Sea

Begin early along Zakynthos' northern coast, when the sea is at its calmest and the island feels almost untouched. Ariane recommends visiting the Blue Caves first thing in the morning. "The colours are at their most intense before the day boats arrive. It's one of those places that feels completely different when you have it almost to yourself."

From here, continue along the coastline, discovering hidden inlets and swimming spots accessible only by sea. Return to the yacht for breakfast at anchor as the island slowly comes to life around you. Beyond The Wreck

The shipwreck draws the crowds. The rest of the island rewards those who keep exploring.

Local Afternoon

A Shift Inland

By midday, head inland to discover a different side of Zakynthos. Olive groves replace open water, winding roads climb into the hills, and traditional villages offer a glimpse of everyday island life. Make your way to the Monastery of Skopiotissa, perched high above the coastline. From here, sweeping views stretch across the Ionian, revealing the island's dramatic geography from an entirely new perspective.

Local Taste

Return to the Coast

As evening approaches, return to the coast. The light softens, the sea calms, and Zakynthos settles into its most atmospheric hours. For dinner, choose Utopia Restaurant, where elevated Mediterranean cuisine is paired with panoramic sea views, or Prosilio, a garden setting known for its contemporary take on traditional Greek dishes.

For Ariane, dining ashore is an essential part of experiencing the island. "The best restaurants are relaxed rather than formal. Fresh ingredients, local wines and a view of the sea usually make for the perfect evening."

Or return on board, where your chef works with fresh, local ingredients—creating something quiet and considered as the day comes to a close.

"Zakynthos is often defined by Navagio Beach, but that's only part of the story. By yacht, you discover the quieter side of the island — hidden coves, dramatic west coast anchorages and stretches of coastline that feel entirely your own."

Local Mornings

Slow Beginnings

The second day begins at anchor off the Vasilikos Peninsula. Start with a swim in the calm waters of Gerakas Bay before cruising through the protected waters of Zakynthos Marine Park.

Continue towards Marathonisi Island, passing through one of the Mediterranean's most important habitats for loggerhead turtles. With luck, you may also spot the elusive Mediterranean monk seal, one of Europe's rarest marine mammals.

Afternoon

Open Water

Lunch is taken at leisure, either ashore or on board, before returning to the water for an afternoon of exploration.

Join a local guide to discover Zakynthos' lesser-known caves and hidden coves, while learning more about the island's unique marine ecosystem. Or simply spend the afternoon swimming, snorkelling and enjoying the extraordinary clarity of the Ionian Sea.

Based on her experience creating itineraries in the Ionian, Ariane recommends leaving room for spontaneity. "Some of the best swimming spots aren't marked on any map. Having the flexibility to follow the coastline and stop where it looks inviting is one of the luxuries of chartering a yacht."

Local Evenings

A Considered Close

For your final evening, make for Zakynthos' west coast, where dramatic cliffs and open horizons create one of the island's most spectacular sunset settings.

Ariane considers this one of the highlights of the itinerary. "The sunsets on the west coast are extraordinary. Watching the light disappear into the Ionian from the deck of a yacht is the perfect way to end a few days on the island."

Dine ashore at Al Nur in Vasilikos, where local ingredients are transformed into refined Mediterranean dishes. Alternatively, remain at anchor beneath the cliffs of Kampi or Schiza, enjoying a final dinner on board as the sun disappears into the Ionian and the coastline falls silent.
