Kitesurfing on Fiji's Coral Coast
Kite surfing in Fiji’s coral coast is one of the most exhilarating experiences you can have on the water. Not only does the region offer the tropical mainstays of copious sunshine, sublime coconut-lined strips of sand and dazzlingly blue, warm water, but, flanked by a fringing reef that meets the Pacific Ocean head on, it also offers some of the most renowned surf breaks on the planet. During Fiji’s winter, the addition of consistent 15-25 knot trade winds in a complementary direction to the waves makes it a kitesurfer’s playground. Your crew can spoil you for choice with the selection of waves and reward you with cold beers at the end of each day of thrilling surfing.
A five-acre speck of sand in the Pacific Ocean, the private resort of Namotu island sits amid some of the most varied surfing and kitesurfing you’ll find anywhere. With plenty of nearby anchorages for Superyachts, this is A kiter’s paradise; it offers nice and easy flatwater as well as waves from all angles depending on which side of the island you ride. Miles of butter flat water within the reef and the lee of the island offer a paradise for beginners, freestylers, and kite foiling, while for more adventurous surfers, world-famous spots like Cloudbreak, Namotu Lefts and Fiji Pipe offer more challenging waves.
Cloudbreak is on every kitsurfer’s bucket list. Not only is it a leg of the WSL tour, but it’s regularly voted as one of the top ten most challenging waves in the world. A fast barrelling left over a shallow reef, this wave becomes faster, shallower and more critical towards the end. Expect to plant multiple smacks down the line here, and if you get the conditions just right, you might even get in the barrel.
For a gentler and more forgiving wave, ask your crew to show you to Namotu Lefts, located, as its name suggests, just off the back of its island namesake. A fun and rip-able kitesurfing wave, it’s more predictable than Cloudbreak, with a wall that allows for some hits down the line with a gentle rap around the reef towards the end. With over seven separate reef breaks within a 20km distance of one another, with wave difficulty levels from basic to hardcore to choose from, and delightfully crystal clear water, the Coral Coast is one of the most sought-after kitesurfing destinations in the world. And the best way to experience it is undoubtedly by superyacht.
