Sorong

Located on the ‘beak’ of the bird’s head peninsula, Sorong is less than one degree south of the equator and the perfect gateway to the spectacular Raja Ampat Islands. It is a busy port town with a picturesque backdrop of hills, mountains and protected forests. Climb the nearby Stone Hill for a fabulous panoramic view of the city and surrounding ocean. Tuna and shrimp are a popular catch with the fisherman in the area and a major export commodity, so if you like fresh seafood make sure to try some before you set sail.

Misool

One of the four major islands in the Raja Ampat archipelago boasting some of the highest levels of marine biodiversity on planet Earth. In crystal clear waters, Raja Ampat is home to 75 percent of all known coral species in the world. Above the surface, Misool is utterly breathtaking with thick green forest, white sandy beaches, coconut trees and natural limestone pinnacles shooting high out the sea. Take a tender to the southern islands of Misool to the Love Lake; an unmissable pristine turquoise, heart-shaped lagoon.

Efkasya

At the easternmost part of Misool you can find the magnificent, remote group of islands called Efkasya. Amongst the beautiful coral there are nearly 1000 species of fish in the waters of Raja Ampat making this the perfect place to dive. Located in the Kaimana regency, there are over 30 dive sites around the bay offering a remarkable collection of underwater delights. It is a rocky underwater terrain with pinnacles, wall boulders and rocks encrusted with magnificent soft coral gardens. Triton Bay is home to an abundance of marine life so expect to see frogfish, parrotfish, pygmy seahorses and schools of barracuda. Whitetip and whalesharks could also be on the cards too. Take a hike through the lush green landscape, swim in the lagoon or visit the local market for to try some tasty fresh fruit.

Agats

Due to the extraordinary location of Agats on a tidal plain, the streets of this town are on raised boardwalks. This unique, charming destination has a bustling waterfront of markets and shops, as you stroll past the churches and mosques of this remote town. Home to the Asmat tribe, once known as fierce warriors and amongst the most feared in the world due to tales of their head hunting practices. Nowadays the Asmat people are known for their elaborate wood carvings, many of which are made for traditional rituals that still take place.

Timika
